How to Make a Digital Yearbook for Your Gap Year

At the beginning of a gap year, everything feels memorable. The first flight. The hostel that looked nothing like the photographs. The stranger who became a friend. The overnight train. The beach nobody back home had heard of. The meal you still cannot pronounce. The day everything went wrong and somehow became one of the best stories of the trip.

You take photographs because you know you will want to remember it. Then you take another thousand.

By the time you come home, your gap year often exists in fragments: camera rolls, WhatsApp chats, Instagram archives, boarding passes, notes, saved locations and memories spread across the phones of people you met along the way.

What should you put in a gap year yearbook?

Start with the things a camera roll cannot explain:

• write about your favourite day
• record the worst journey
• remember the accommodation you would never book again
• add the photograph that became everyone's favourite
• save the inside jokes
• ask friends to sign your page before everybody flies home

Create playful superlatives around the trip. Most likely to miss a flight. Best unofficial tour guide. Most adventurous eater. Most likely to move permanently to the country you visited.

Then make space for the quieter things too. What changed about you? What surprised you? What did you learn about the people you travelled with? What version of yourself existed during that year?

Your gap year does not end when the flight home lands

Eventually everyone returns to ordinary life. People go back to university. Someone starts work. Someone moves to another country. The group chat gets quieter. And something that once occupied every day becomes a story you tell occasionally.

That is precisely why it deserves preserving.

The trip happened. These were your people. This was who you were then.
